1923 Was Filmed in These STUNNING Locations You Can Actually Visit
The second season may be over, but you can still obsess over the Yellowstone prequel’s backdrops.
Well, that’s a wrap on the season two of 1923. Similar to the first installment of the Yellowstone prequel, the second season also features sweeping landscapes and old Western backdrops. Throughout the drama’s run, viewers have been transported to a Montana ranch, multiple countries in Africa and beyond, and a handful of spots in the Lone Star State.
So, as we wait for official confirmation on the show’s fate for a potential season three, let’s dissect everything we know about the filming locations featured in the widely beloved Paramount+ series.
Where Was 1923 Filmed?
Much of the show was shot in Montana, which provided the perfect Western backdrop for the series. The fictional Dutton ranch, which was also featured in Yellowstone, is actually the historic Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana.
Buildings in Butte, Montana, were used for the town’s exteriors and interiors, including Butte Civic Center and Butte’s Carpenter’s Union Hall, NBC Montana reports. Other Montana towns tapped for the production include Whitehall, Park City, Valier, Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Hamilton, and Dillon, according to IMDb.
When the show takes viewers outside of the United States, it’s all real. “I don’t build a world with visual effects,” creator Taylor Sheridan tells Entertainment Weekly about the Yellowstone universe. “I go shoot these corners of the world that people haven’t seen.”
In an interview with Deadline, Sheridan and David Glasser (the CEO of 101 Studios, one of the show’s production companies), shared that the production was filmed in South Africa, Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania, as well as on the island state of Malta and Kabul in Afghanistan. One of the standout South African locations is Kearsney Manor, which served as the Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, where Spencer and Alexandra meet. Filming in these locations was no easy feat.
“You know how hard it is to move a crew around in Africa in 2022 with Covid, and all the rules and all the politics?” Sheridan says.
For 1923‘s second season, the production moved to Texas. Filming took place in Austin, including near the University of Texas campus. Historic streets were also transformed for the series in Lockhart and Bartlett, Texas.
