Alexandra Dutton faces assault on train while Spencer Dutton navigates complex challenges in Texas.

The latest episode of Paramount+’s acclaimed series 1923, titled “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” continues to unravel the harrowing journey of the Dutton family as they endure extraordinary trials in their quest for survival. In this gripping fifth episode, Alexandra Dutton, played by Julia Schlaepfer, finds herself on the Indignity Express, a train where her trials reach shocking new heights. After escaping the confines of Sussex society, Alexandra has already faced trauma at the hands of robbers and corrupt officials. Now, with her newfound independence, she attempts to navigate the hostile world of American train travel.

Alexandra’s dire situation leads her to make a desperate decision: to work as a waitress for food, as she arrives penniless. Serving rich patrons in the dining car, she becomes the target of a violent sexual advance from a male passenger. In a moment of trauma-induced clarity, Alexandra defends herself, pouring a pot of scalding coffee on her attacker’s lap and striking him with the pot. “He raped me with his hand,” Alexandra declares to the Chicago police as witnesses uphold her claim of self-defense, potentially saving her from a severe legal fallout.

After the devastating incident, Alexandra encounters a relief of sorts through two compassionate passengers, Hillary and Paul, played by Janet Montgomery and Augustus Prew. They offer her shelter in their home when a snowstorm cancels her train to Fargo. Their kindness presents a glimmer of hope amidst Alexandra’s relentless struggle.

Meanwhile, Spencer Dutton, portrayed by Brandon Sklenar, continues his perilous journey in Texas, where he encounters U.S. Marshal Mamie Fossett. His connection to the ongoing manhunt for Teonna, Pete, and Runs His Horse places him in a precarious position. When Sheriff William McDowell, a friend to the Duttons, learns of Spencer’s presence, he urges him to stay away from Montana, warning him against sparking further conflict. “Winter’s over,” Spencer replies defiantly, showing resilience in the face of despair.

What makes this episode particularly intense is its focus on the perpetual cycle of violence and trauma experienced by both Alexandra and Spencer. The writing team, led by Taylor Sheridan, deftly portrays not only the harsh realities of the American West but also the psychological ramifications of constant assaults on their characters.

As the episode unfolds, viewers are also introduced to the villains hunting Teonna Rainwater, Father Renaud and Marshal Kent, who represent the era’s brutal underbelly. Their relentless pursuit culminates in a dramatic confrontation with Pete, Teonna’s lover, in the Texas plains, emphasizing the far-reaching consequences of their violent mission.

Fans of the series are left hanging on a cliff as the episode ends, with the tensions coming to a head, leaving viewers anticipating the resolution of these fraught narratives.

After reeling from the chaos of this week’s events, viewers are undoubtedly questioning the future of the Dutton family as they confront not only enemies from within but also external threats. Only two episodes remain in this season, maintaining the suspense and intrigue that has characterized 1923 from the start.
