One star of the Yellowstone spinoff, 1923, is ready to ride into the modern day with his latest Western venture. Acclaimed actor Brandon Sklenar is set to feature in the upcoming Western movie, The Rescue.
According to Deadline, Sklenar has been cast in an undisclosed role in The Rescue, which will be helmed by Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli and distributed by Skydance. The Rescue will be produced by Ponciroli alongside Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg. John Fusco, best known for creating Netflix’s Marco Polo and penning several Western films, is the screenwriter.
Details about The Rescue are being kept under wraps. However, the Western film will center around a rodeo cowboy’s skills being put to the test outside the arena. Production on the Skydance title is expected to begin this summer.
Sklenar’s casting in The Rescue comes on the heels of his praised showing in the hit romantic drama, It Ends With Us, portraying the ex-boyfriend of Blake Lively’s central character who re-enters her life. The New Jersey native has several other film projects on the docket, including the Christopher Landon-helmed mystery thriller, Drop, and Paul Feig’s psychological thriller, The Housemaid, which also stars Sydney Sweeney. The Drop will make its debut at South by Southwest this spring, while The Housemaid is currently in production.
Fans best know Sklenar for portraying Spencer Dutton in 1923, the Golden Globe-nominated series created by Yellowstone franchise brainchild Taylor Sheridan, with the actor featuring alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. The series chronicles a generation of the Dutton family in the eponymous year and them surviving a series of major events in Montana, including drought, Prohibition and The Great Depression.
After a successful first season, Season 2 experienced lengthy delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, production finally commenced last summer and wrapped in November, spanning Texas and Montana. Sklenar teased a “darker” second season of 1923, suggesting the show would surprise people with its direction. 1923 Season 2 premieres via Paramount+ on Feb. 23.
Sklenar Appeared in Another Western Series
Though Sklenar’s small-screen career stands out thanks to 1923, he has also appeared in another Western series, Walker: Independence, and once played Burt Reynolds in the Paramount+ biographical drama, The Offer.
While he continues to add film roles to his resume, Sklenar has expressed some interest in potentially joining the DC Universe, with fancasts suggesting he’s the ideal candidate to portray Batman in The Brave and The Bold. Lively, who starred in Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, co-signed the fan suggestion for Sklenar to suit up as The Dark Knight.
No release window has been confirmed for The Rescue.
