As Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) hold down the fort at the Yellowstone ranch with Jack (Darren Mann) and his wife, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) makes a harrowing journey home to join the fight.

I think the fan theory about how Alex Dutton’s journey will end has emerged because it makes for a great story. If she arrives at the ranch first, Alex will have to explain to the Dutton family that she is married to Spencer, and she made it from London, England, to be with him. Alex’s English accent will surely throw the Dutton family for a loop, although they originally hail from Europe themselves. My favorite part about this theory, supported by some people I watch the show with, is the idea of Alex explaining herself to her new clan.

The other element that makes the fan theory fun to entertain is the prospect of Spencer arriving at the ranch after Alex has. I can picture Spencer greeting 1923 characters Jacob, Cara, Jack, and Elizabeth before Alex reveals that she, too, is there to greet her husband. It would be a beautiful reunion for the lovers who haven’t spent any time since their whirlwind romance in season 1. If she is still carrying her baby, Alex can reveal to Spencer he’s a father, making for a season finale-worthy homecoming for the veteran who hasn’t been home since the war.

If she arrives at the Yellowstone ranch first, Alex may have to prove herself to the rest of Spencer’s family. While Spencer’s wife has surely learned enough about her partner to prove to his kin that she is indeed familiar with Cara’s nephew, there’s a concrete way that Alexandra can prove herself to the family if she arrives prematurely. As we saw in 1923 season 2, episode 4, as she desperately packs her leather travel bag with her belongings on the bathroom floor, Alex still holds Spencer’s letters from Cara, which they read together on the shore in Tanganyika, Africa.

Contrasting what happened at Ellis Island, it would be a beautiful experience to watch Cara and the rest of Spencer’s family believe and accept Alex. Of course, Alexandra will have to make it from Bozeman first. I imagine that if Alex makes it there, the Dutton family is a well-known enough bunch that someone should know to take Alex to the ranch. Again, that’s if the infectiously hopeful 1923 theory comes true.
