Y: Marshals — Everything We Know About Luke Grimes’ New Yellowstone Spinoff

Dust off your cowboy boots — Kayce Dutton’s story will continue in a new Yellowstone spinoff. Officially announced in May 2025, Y: Marshals will follow the youngest Dutton son, played by Luke Grimes, as he puts his ranching days behind him and joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana, according to Deadline.

Unlike Yellowstone — which aired on the Paramount Network — Y: Marshals will be a CBS original, airing on Sunday nights on the network. Y: Marshals joins a slate of future Yellowstone spinoffs, including 6666, 1944 and The Madison. Three other Yellowstone spinoffs — including 1883, Lawmen: Bass Reeves and 1923 — have already debuted.

What is Y: Marshals about?

Y: Marshals will see Kayce Dutton “join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence,” per the show’s official logline.

Dutton’s new career trajectory isn’t unexpected. In the series finale of Yellowstone, which aired in December 2024, fans saw the youngest son save Yellowstone Ranch by selling the land to Broken Rock Reservation.

It was the deal of a lifetime for High Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), who paid $1.25 an acre — the price Kayce’s ancestors paid when they settled there. For the low price, Rainwater agreed to Dutton’s two conditions: to keep his family — which includes wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) — on the East Camp and for Yellowstone never to be developed or sold.

Who is in the cast of Y: Marshals?

For now, Grimes is the only confirmed Y: Marshals cast member. When the spinoff news was announced in May 2025, the actor shared the Deadline announcement on Instagram alongside a very on-brand caption.

“Cowboys dont say goodbye, they say see you later,” he wrote.

Who is writing and producing Y: Marshals?

Spencer Hudnut will be at the helm of Y: Marshals as the show’s writer, executive producer and showrunner. His previous credits include CBS’s Unforgettable and Paramount+’s SEAL Team. Hudnut will be aided by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, who will also serve as an executive producer.

“In terms of Taylor’s involvement, we’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach told reporters ahead of the reveal, per Variety. Grimes will also be an executive producer on Y: Marshals.

When does filming for Y: Marshals begin?

Y: Marshals is slated to begin production this summer, per Deadline. It will have a similar look and feel to Sheridan’s original Yellowstone series, per the network.

“We don’t do cheap,” Reisenbach said. “We do have a budget for that show that is in line with other broadcast series.”

When will Y: Marshals premiere?

Y: Marshals is set to premiere on CBS in the spring of 2026. Season 1 of Y: Marshals will consist of 13 episodes (four episodes longer than Yellowstone season 1), which will air weekly on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
